Shakespeares Hamlet compare and contrast Hamlet vs. Laertes
No two individuals are alike, regardless of similar upbringing. It is reasonable to assume that even twins brought up in exactly the same environment, sharing the same daily activities, and living practically the same life, will act differently when faced with the same situation. Each individual evolves with his or her own uniqueness, style, and way of life. The audience witnesses this phenomenon in Shakespeares Hamlet. Lord Hamlet and Laertes experienced similar childhoods, and shared similar family attributes. They were both born into royalty and throughout their lives were treated as such. Hamlet and Laertes were reared with the same forms of schooling, and were taught to abide by the same ethics and morals. Although Hamlet and Laertesâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is evident that Hamlets character and nature, which leads to his action of revenge, is that based on reason, while Laertess form of revenge is that based on passion and impulse. When Hamlets father appeared to him in the form of a ghost claiming the current king, Claudius, Hamlets uncle, had murdered him; Hamlet did not heed the information and obtain his revenge right away. Hamlets reaction was that of a wise methodical individual. It took Hamlet some time to convince himself that the ghost truly was a good spirit of his father, relaying truthful words in order that his soul may rest in peace, and even then Hamlet still wanted more proof. Only until Hamlet was certain and had confirmation of Claudiuss guilt was he ready to take action. The reader sees how Hamlet finds his final convincing piece of verification through a conversation Hamlet has with his good friend Horatio: Hamlet ...There is a play tonight before the king: One scene of it comes near the circumstance Which I have told thee of my fathers death. Berkeley Free Essays
The concerns of idealism and empiricism have been of continual concern in philosophy.à Pre-Kantian thought had this collision at the highest point of controversy.à Idealism holds the view that reality is composed in the consciousness of various agents. We will write a custom essay sample on Berkeley or any similar topic only for you Order Now It finds its most radical postulation in the work of George Berkeley.à Berkeley famously holds that view that nothing exists in the absence of perception ââ¬â ââ¬Ëto be is to be perceivedââ¬â¢, as the maxim states.à The reality of objects is assured by their projection onto or within the consciousness of different agents. Idealism here is represented by Berkeley who is the foremost proponent of a pure idealism in the western philosophical tradition.à Similarly, he is the only major immaterialist thinker in his era of Enlightenment philosophy.à The role of the perceiver is the final referent in the equation.à This is in line with the return to science and the re-appropriation of classical values that characterized the Enlightenment worldview.à Empiricism is headed by John Locke, the emphasis here is thus not as much on the perceiver as it is on the perceived objects.à Within both traditions of philosophic thought there is great emphasis on perception as the key determining process in the attainment of reality (or an accurate representation thereof). When perception is the key to proper inquiry there are two main branches of problems that must be accounted for, illusion and delusion.à Illusion is a problem or difficulty with the function of sensory input and delusion, being a problem with the perceiving mind.à à The opposition between a mental and perceptual problem doesnââ¬â¢t hold up as well in contemporary philosophic thought, however it seems necessary to include these models of thought for the purpose of explicating the idealist-empiricist debate circa 1700s.à Another framing concern is the epistemological character of the entire dialogue.à It is specifically a drive toward certainty that fueled much philosophic inquiry. Illusions, in the sense that oneââ¬â¢s perceptions imply contradictory things, have often fascinated philosophers from Plato through Descartes and even until today.à In Berkeleyââ¬â¢s work Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous, he discusses a number of perceptual discrepancies using Philonous as his mouthpiece.à The problem is stated that if one puts a hot hand in water the temperature feels cooler and warmer if one places a cold hand in the same water (Berkeley 142-143). This is done within the context of Berkeleyââ¬â¢s idealist project which is to remove attributes from the object and describe things in terms of their existence in perception.à He starts by mentioning the limits of the senses: they cannot infer from observation to causes and are bound to that which is immediately perceived (Berkeley 138).à In this manner, he argues that since there is a discrepancy in the perception of the same object. The ââ¬Ëtemperatureââ¬â¢ of the water must not be a uniformed attribute that exists within the water.à Otherwise, the water must be at once hot and cold and this is rejected as an absurdity (Berkeley 143). Hylas raises the objection that while the sensation may be in the perceiver, the quality that gives rise to it must be within the object.à This is countered by stating that such a quality has no bearing as we know of it only by our intellect.à That is, we have removed it from any sort of corporeality.à He writes in his principles that ideas of one God and ideas of man are both subject to being ideas, they cannot exist ââ¬Å"otherwise than in a perceiving mindâ⬠(Berkeley 74). Lockeââ¬â¢s approach to this particular problem is addressed in a different way in his Essays Concerning Human Understanding.à While Berkeley describes the sensations of heat and cold as analogous to sweetness and bitterness or more generally pleasure and pain, Locke conceives the situation of temperature as analogous the properties of motion.à Locke holds the view that heat and cold are actually a form of motion at a minute level (Locke 2.8.21). This is, of course, a prototypical view for the modern scientific view of temperature where heat is represented by low-level vibration of particles.à The faster the vibration the higher the temperature.à With this model, what we feel in the bucket example is the deceleration of particles in the warm hand and the acceleration of particles in the cool hand.à The differential temperatures see to average themselves out.à This model is well in line with the contemporary palette, however, it fails to address Berkeleyââ¬â¢s perspective which erases the concept of an inherent quality. The problem of delusion is brought up, again in Berkeleyââ¬â¢s Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous.à Hylas posits, ââ¬Å"What difference is there between real things and chimeras formed by the imagination . . . since they are all equally in the mind?â⬠(Berkeley 197).à The answer comes that ââ¬Å"ideas formed by the imagination are faint and indistinctâ⬠(Berkeley 197).à This may be a submerged reference to Descartes demand for ââ¬Ëclear and distinctââ¬â¢ ideas as the foundation of analytic truths. Locke discusses this in his Essays Concerning Human Understanding.à He suggests that wit produces combinations of ideas while judgement separates them (Locke 2.11.2).à He writes, ââ¬Å"How much the imperfection of accurately discriminating ideas one from another lies, either in the dulness or faults of the organs of sense; or want of acuteness, exercise, or attention in the understandingâ⬠(Locke 2.11.2). Furthermore, he suggests that ideas must link up with things.à Sensation is produced by the conformity of the object with the perceiver (4.4.4). The distance between the two thinkers is thus that of their views of the fundamental role of perception.à For Berkeley it may seem that Locke is being overly skeptical on the role of the perceiver.à For in the thinking of Locke the mind is not the origin but the senses which shape the mind.à For Locke, we are born tabula rasa, a blank slate to be impressed by our sensory input. Our mind takes up the job of shaping sensation after that point.à This is to say with Locke we are in an a posteriori epistemology whereas with Berkeley we are a priori.à The problem for Berkeley could thus be characterized as finding the foundation of knowledge on the continually shifting horizon of sensation rather than the static, constant world of ideas.à In a way this is analogous to the divergence between Heraclitus who wrote that ââ¬Å"nothings stays fixedâ⬠and Parmenides who held that ââ¬Å"Being is unchangingâ⬠(Wheelwright 70,90).à The problem has come from a long history and different forms of this dispute will likely continue with eternal perpetuity. Pinatex Environmental Analysis
Question: Discuss about thePinatexfor Environmental Analysis. Answer: Introduction Pinatex is a leather product that is made of pineapple leaves remains. The products were developed by a woman named Carmon Hijosa in the 90s (Joshi, 2014). The product was developed after she realized that the leaves of the pineapple fruit had very fine and strong fiber which could be utilized to make leather products. Carmon realized that the product could be used instead of leather from animal skins. This idea materialized and was put into industrial trial and she perfected the product hence leading to formation of PinatexTm. The product has brought about sustainability in terms of the environment due to the fact that it is environmentally friendly. Pinatex also helps in minimizing cost of production since production does not require additional inputs rather than the ones needed to produce pineapple. The product will be marketed in Australia because of various reasons. The major reason for the decision to market Pinatex in Australia is because of the vibrant leather industry in the country (Mayrhofer, 2012). It therefore means that the introduction of Pinatex into the country can reduce the over-reliance on animal skins in making important products. The market potential and industry dynamics together with favorable government regulations were central in making decision to market Pinatexin Australia. Discussion Environmental Analysis The analysis of the external environmental factors that may affect the international marketing of Pinatex is important in determining and understanding positive and negative influences that exist in the industry and the market in which the business will be operating. The environmental analysis of the product`s new market will include assessment of factors such as political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal factors: Political Factors There are several political factors that may affect the marketing of Pinatex in the Australian market. One of the political factors that may affect the international marketing of Pinatex is regulations that may be politically motivated to target products from a particular country. International politics play a very important role in international marketing and international trade. Bilateral and political relations between Philippines and Australia may affect the marketing of Pinatex in Australia (Paliwoda, 2013). Since the two countries have favorable relations between them, it is expected that the introduction of PInatex into Australia will not be difficult since there will be no politically motivated resistance. Another political factor that may affect the marketing of Pinatex in Australia is the resistance from locals who depend on leather products. They may influence the government to restrict the use of the new product in the country, a move which would greatly affect the market ing of Pinatex. Economical Factors There are micro economic and macro economic factors that may affect the marketing of Pinatex internationally. One of these factors includes the economic growth rate of the country in which the product is being introduced. The level of economic growth in Australia is expected to be 3.1%percent according to The World Bank. This is a good indicator of the growth in levels of consumption within the country. This is because economic growth results into improved levels of income which will increase the disposable income of individuals. This will in turn increase the demand of textile products and especially Pinatex which will increase sales volumes. Inflation rate is also an important factor when marketing a product in a country. High inflation rate increases prices of product and therefore decreasing the demand of the product. The level of inflation in Australia is low which means that the prices are stable hence making it favorable for the company to market Pinatex in Australia. Another important economic factor is the cost of factors of production in a country. This is a very important factor especially in the manufacturing industry (Cant, 2006). These are cost of labor, entrepreneurship, land and capital. Social Factors The social factors that may affect the marketing of Pinatex internationally include traditions, beliefs, culture, practices and customs of the people. There are different cultures in different countries and in different regions. This therefore means that the way of life of a community affects their consumption behavior. In Australia, the culture of the country is entrenched on the use of textile products and desire for sustainable development. This makes it suitable for Ananas Annam to market Pinatex (Joshi, 2014). The introduction of Pinatex in Australia will mean that the people will be more relieved since it makes high quality products at cheaper cost and its environmentally sustainable. The tradition of the people in Australia accepts the use of textile products unlike in some countries where the use of textile products is very minimal (Paliwoda, 2013). The social life of people also determines consumption of a product, for example in a country in Qatar, the use of products as wo ven baskets is very rare since the textile industry is not developed in the country. If Pinatex is introduced in such a country, it will be more difficult to successfully market the product unlike in a country like Australia. Technological Factors The technological factors that may affect the marketing of Pinatex in Australia include changes in production methods, processes and techniques. These changes help in increasing efficiency in the manufacturing and processing of goods. One of the technological factors that is expected to affect the marketing of Pinatex is the development of machinery with better knitting, pleating and decorating ability compared to other machines used in the past. The adoption of this technology will be costly for the company but will help in ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in production. TPM Company has developed a machine which is can perform different printing and designing activities. Technology in marketing internationally will also be a crucial factor when marketing Pinatex. The traditional forms of marketing are becoming unpopular with the consumers and they are too costly for many organizations. Many companies are shifting gears to electronic marketing and commerce. This is cheaper and m ore convenient than the conventional methods. Social media advertising has also been very important in influencing marketing of products internationally (Kleindl, 2007). Therefore, Ananas Annam should be technologically informed in order to keep up with the competition in this industry and help the company in minimizing costs of production. Environmental Factors The environmental factors that affect marketing of Pinatex include things related to pollution of the environment. Since Pinatex is made from the leaves of a pineapple fruit, it is environmentally friendly and sustainable. This is because, the company advocates production of pineapples using organic means to reduce environmental pollution and ensure safety of consumers. The production methods of the company are environmentally friendly since, the manufacturing process does not involve use of heavy fuels which are environmentally hazardous. The introduction of Pinatex in Australia will also help in conserving nature and saving animals which would have otherwise been slaughtered to obtain hides and skins. The company will also ensure that it abides to all environmental and industrial regulations set by the national and local authorities (Fitzen, 2009). The processes used by the company are ecologically friendly and therefore, it will be a positive for the country when Pinatex will be i ntroduced in Australia. Use of Pinatex to make textile products also helps in optimizing use of resources. This is because the pineapple leaves that would have been disposed off will be converted to another economically important product. Legal Factors There are various legal factors that affect the international marketing of a product. This factors range from adherence to safety rules and regulations to payment of license fees. Before a product is approved for use and sale in a new country, it has to undergo various processes. The product should meet international standards as per the ISO regulations. The product also has to meet local quality and safety standards. For the company to market Pinatex in Australia, it has to register the product in the country and pay for permits to allow the importation of the product into the country (Pride Ferrell, 2017). The company has to obey the labor and industrial laws of the country as well. The management of the company should be aware of competition laws and all the other laws that govern trade in the country in which they tend to introduce a product. The legal environment is very important because it helps the company prepare adequately on time so as to avoid waste of time and resources when it begins the approval process. Conclusion There are several factors that a company should consider before deciding to market a product internationally and in which country to market the product. It is important to undertake environmental analysis in order to understand the market and the industry. This analysis gives the company an insight on strengths and weaknesses of players in the industry and opportunities that can be exploited by the company as it ventures the market. This analysis also helps in identifying the possible challenges that the company is going to face when marketing the product. The organization is then able to put strategies to overcome these challenges. This report will help the management of Ananas Anam in understanding the Australian textile industry and how introducing this product will affect the market and the industry in general. Gender Roles Throughout History Essay Example
Gender Roles Throughout History Essay Part one Gender roles of diverse cultures have differed immensely throughout history. The evolution of gender roles first began in the Paleolithic Age and then began to transform with the transformation of the Paleolithic Age to the Neolithic Age. Women in Mesopotamia, India, Greece, China, and Rome were not treated as equals and viewed as inferior to men. Cultures like Egypt and Persia had similar laws for women and treated them with more respect out of any of the other cultures. The Paleolithic Age was responsible for the introductions of many vital aspects of our world today such as, technology, agriculture, and gender roles. The Paleolithic culture was based on a hunter and gatherer society, which had a great influence on the gender roles of males and females. For the most part, the men were responsible for the hunting, mainly due to their physical build. Genetically speaking, men are normally larger in size, stronger, and more aggressive in comparison to women. Despite the large size and strength differences, both males and females were treated with equality. Women contributed to the Paleolithic society by being responsible for the gathering of edible plants and berries. Although gathering plants and berries is considered to be less dangerous and fairly easy when being compared to hunting, gathering was considered to be one of the most important contributions to Paleolithic society. When men went off to hunt, there was no guarantee that they would always be able to bring back enough meat, if any, to feed the community. The plants and berries gathered by the women were responsible for feeding the community daily, especially when the men were unsuccessful in their hunting trip. The Neolithic Age was the transformation and progression from the Paleolithic Age lifestyle. The transition of the different eraââ¬â¢s influenced the gender roles of men and women, changing them based on the development of their new lifestyle. The main gender role difference between the Paleolithic Age and the Neolithic Age was male domination. Although men became much more dominant of the two genders, women were still treated with respect. Because of the size and strength advantage men had over women, men were responsible for most of the hard manual labor, while women were given roles more suited for their weaker and nurturing nature. Men started to realize that instead of hunting and killing animals, they should capture, domesticate, and breed the animals because it would be more beneficial to the community in the long run and provide a more stable lifestyle. The women also realized the importance of stability and collected seeds for an assortment of plants and fruits so they could invest their time in farming plants instead of gathering them. Because of the gathering role and responsibility women played in the past in the Paleolithic Age, women were very familiar with plants. Women understood how plants grew and the factors and environment needed in order to be successful in growing them, which is why women were responsible for the start of plant farming. Since communities did not have to relocate so often based on animal migration, and men and women did not have to spend several tiring hours searching for animals to hunt or food to gather, people had more time on their hands. This extra time allowed women to concentrate more on looking after their families and children, cooking, cleaning, and sewing. This led to men virtually being responsible for all the difficult labor. Unlike in the Paleolithic Age where men and women were equal and relied on each other for survival, men no longer needed to depend on women as much. Most of the responsibility for survival was placed on the men which is what ultimately led to their dominance. The religions and laws developed in Mesopotamia prevented women from asserting control in society. Elite classes such as priests and warriors manipulated religious beliefs to say male Gods were more valuable and dominant in comparison to female Gods. This led to justifying male domination over females in the Mesopotamian society. Men were in control and held the power, allowing them to abuse their wives, sell them into slavery to pay off debts, and partake in consensual sexual relations even if married, while women were drowned to death as punishment for committing adultery. In Mesopotamia, women were mostly responsible for tending to the children and household. Women did not have the power to make life decisions for themselves and instead, relied on the men in their family to make those decisions for them. In Egypt, although men were the dominant gender in society, women were treated with great respect, which led to a very stable and successful society. The Egyptians believed that the goal of life was happiness and viewed home and family life as the main source of it. Egyptian law basically treated women as equals for the most part. Women were allowed to hold positions of power, own property, own slaves, receive an education, and even borrow money. Although Pharaohs were normally men, certain circumstances allowed for women to hold the same title. The Egyptians believed that marriage and family were very important aspects in life. They believed that unconditional love and kindness were vital in a marriage and thought that husband and wife should always treat each other with respect. In regards to family, unlike many cultures that viewed children as another mouth to feed or another worker, Egyptians truly enjoyed their children and experienced much joy in their families. In India, public figures and important positions were given to men. Although women did not have any public authority or receive any formal education, they were still considered to be important to society by having much influence when it came to family life and were supposed to be treated with respect from their family and husband. Sometimes it was difficult for women to take of the household due to their young age. Beginning as a child, women were taught that they were supposed to devote their lives to men. Very young child brides were quite common in India but ceremonies would not take place until the child had gone through puberty. Also, according to the Laws of Manu, women were allowed to inherit property. Women could ââ¬Å"influence affairs within their families but enjoyed no public authorityâ⬠(Meridians, page 98). The Laws of Manu state, ââ¬Å"deities delight in places where women are revered, but where women are not revered all rites are fruitless,â⬠(Meridians, pg 78). The Code of Hammurabi does not give a lot of freedom to women. Also, the Code is very strict when it comes to marriage. The Code allowes fathers and brothers to arrange marriages and punishes cheating wives by sentencing them to death. Different from the Code of Hammurabi, the Laws of Manu stresses the importance of husbands revering their wives and keeping them happy (Meridians, P. 78). China was a patriarchal society where men were considered to be the leader of the household. Although women were not normally seen as public figures, women were considered to be very valuable in the home and family. In the beginning, women were actually considered to be extremely important because the female side passed power and the line of succession. However, there was one woman, Fu Hao, who stood out from all the rest during Shang times. Hao was in charge of her own estate and oversaw the sacrificial ceremonies that most men oversaw (Bentley Ziegler, pg 124). In Perisa, family and clans were considered to be very important. The Persian culture was considered much more laid back in comparison to many others because classes were free and people were given the freedom to practice any religion, pursue any profession, and even borrow money to start their own business. Unlike most cultures, women were able to enjoy social and legal freedoms and were a very active part of society. Women were treated with equality and respect. Females were permitted to take part in religious ceremonies and occasionally even serve as the priest. Their were no restrictions on relationships or marriage- young people in relationships were told to practice honesty and loyalty, and to always be faithful and share each others happiness (Notes on Iran, P. 1) . When selecting a husband, women were instructed to be wise but free to choose who to marry on their own (Notes on Iran, P. 1). Many women took on jobs of weaving textiles and were given portions of grain, wine, beer, and occasionally meat from the imperial and temple workshops who employed them (Traditions Encounters, P. 170). If the King passed away and the price was too young to rule, the kings wife was allowed to take the throne. Pourandokht was the first Persian Queen and was thought of throughout history as kind hearted and wise (Notes on Iran, P. 1). Persians tended to have a close knit family and parents were encouraged to teach their children right and wrong and the importance of equality. In Athens, Greece, women were seen as inferior to men, not very intelligent, and thought of to have strong emotions. Women had guardians who were their closet male relative or husband. The guardian system was set up because Athenian philosophers, other than Plato, thought that women needed to be protected from themselves and society so they could not cause any damage to themselves or others (Women in the Ancient World, P. 2). Women were not allowed to own any property other than clothing, jewelry, and slaves, and we only allowed to purchase inexpensive items. In order for a woman to gain citizenship, she had to marry a male citizen. Fathers were responsible for arranging marriages between their young daughters and older men who were normally in their twenties. Like Indian culture, the girls married after they went through puberty. The job of a wife was to have children and take care of their house. Wives were never supposed to leave their homes unless to attend special events or funerals. If a married woman was seen outside of her home without it being any of the above occasions, people considered her to be a prostitute, slave, or so poor that she had no choice but to work (Women in the Ancient World, P. 2). Women from Sparta were different from much of Greece because they were able to own and inherit land. Spartan women were known to be bold and run the household, but were not supposed to be seen as too dominant over their husbands in public. The main purpose of marriage for people of Greece was not for love, but for the purpose of breeding (Women in the Ancient World, P. ). In Rome, women were constantly under the authority of men. Roman law insisted that women had to obey their fathers until they married, then in which case, had to obey their husbands. Even if a woman was widowed, she was still supposed to have some kind of male supervision of her finances (Women in the Ancient World, Rome). Roman men greatly valued marriage and treated their wives with great respe ct. Although women were never allowed to hold office, several men listened to the advice of their wives when not in public. Women did not enjoy working and only did so if they were lower class and had to (Women in the Ancient World-Rome). The Paleolithic and Neolithic differed in gender roles due to the change in their lifestyles. In the Paleolithic Age, women and men were considered equals because they had to rely on each other equally in order to survive. The transition to the Neolithic Age caused men to dominant women since most of the responsibility for survival was placed on the shoulders of the men. Men no longer needed to rely on females as much as they had to in the Paleolithic Age. Mesopotamian culture treated women with very little respect. Men were allowed to abuse their wives, sell them into slavery, and even commit adultery. If a Mesopotamian woman ever committed adultery, she would be sentenced to death. The Egyptian culture and Persian culture are most comparable to one another in the sense that they embraced family, love and marriage and treated women with immense respect and equality. In India, ever since women were children, they were always taught that they were supposed to devote their lives to their husbands. Indian women had arranged marriages and married after they went through puberty, much like the Athens in Greece. In China, although women were normally not seen as public figures, they were considered to be very important in home and family life. Women of Athens, Greece, led very strict lives and were considered to be very weak minded and unintelligent. Like the Indian culture, they had arranged marriages and married mainly to breed offspring. Spartan women different from Athenian women in the sense they Spartan women were very as very bold and not weak minded at all. In Rome, women were under the constant authority of men. However, despite this, Roman men took the advice of their wives when given in private, and were dominant when in the public eye. Barry. Role of Women in Ancient Persia. Notes on Iran. Using the Preterite Perfect Tense in Spanish
Using the Preterite Perfect Tense in Spanish The preterite perfect tense is unusual in Spanish, and youà are unlikely to hear it in everyday speech nor have a need, in most situations, to use it. But you should be aware of how it is used in case you come across it in literature or historical accounts. Except when a writer is seeking a literary effect or providing a bad translation from English, the preterite perfect is seldom used in modern writing. Key Takeaways: Preterite Perfect Tense The preterite perfect tense is formed by using the preterite form of haber followed by a past participle. The preterite perfect is not common in modern Spanish, being mainly used for literary effect. In its historical use, the preterite perfect was often used to provide a sense of immediacy of action. How To Use the Preterite Perfect The preterite perfect, also known as the anterior perfect or theà pretà ©rito anteriorà in Spanish, is formed by using theà preteriteà ofà haberà followed by theà past participle. It is used to refer to an event that was completed immediately prior to another event in the past, and thus it is usually used in sentences that also include use of another verb past tense. In other words, a verb in the preterite perfect is almost never the only verb in a sentence. Here is an excerpt fromà Cervantes Don Quijote to illustrate:à Apenasà hubo dichoà esto el cristiano cautivo, cuando el jinete se arrojà ³ del caballo y vino a abrazar al mozo.à (The Christian captive had barely said this when the horseman leaped off his horse and came to hug the lad.) Note that the act of saying something (hubo dicho) immediately preceded a past action of hugging the lad. As in the examples below, use of the preterite perfect follows a phrase or word with a time element. Regardless of the specific words used, the word or phrase can be translated as something that means as soon as or immediately after, as that sense of immediacy is conveyed by the verb tense. And while the preterite perfect frequently is translated using an English perfect tense (one using had and the participle), it is often fine to translate using the simple preterite. There seems to be little difference, for example, in meaning between as soon as I saw it and as soon as I had seen it, so feel free to use whichever sounds better. Examples of the Preterite Perfect in Use Y luego que yo laà hube visto, caà sobre mi rostro.à (And as soon as I saw it, I fell upon my face.)Cuandoà hubo comprendidoà esto no pudo evitar echar un vistazo al chico.à (Once he understood this he could not avoid glancing at the boy.)Una vez queà hubimos encontradoà un rbol que daba sombra, me ayudà ³ a sentarme en el pasto.à (Once we found a tree that provided shade, he helped me get seated in the grass.)Una vezà hube conocidoà varios pueblos de la provincia, decidà escaparme al Sur.à (Once I had met some peoples from the province, I decided to flee to the South.)Cuando todos los diosesà hubieron muerto, Tonatiuh, el sol, comenzà ³ su interminable camino por el firmamento.à (When all the gods died, Tonatiuh, the sun, began his eternal journey through the firmament.()Cuandoà hube sabidoà del budismo sabà a bien lo que era el dharma.à (As soon as I knew about Buddhism, I knew what the dharma was.)

To develop an industry like legal Information Technology, agriculture, and marketing etc, the knowledge of market of specific country is also very necessary. A market design tells about the thickness, congestion, and safety of an industry.Boat and Yacht industry is an excellent opportunity for China because Chinaââ¬â¢s development Marines is speedy. Chinaââ¬â¢s market is very slow still because of Chinaââ¬â¢s rules and regulations regarding boat industry. There is not clear concept of laws, taxation and license in China as compare to other countries. To develop this industry China needs numbers of boats and yacht because it will be costly to purchase from other countries without any expertise. Many foreign shareholders can take benefits of it by investing in this busi ness industry. to develop such industry China has to take license so that the business dispute and social dispute can be settled and people can save from any legal pursuit and take benefits from fair dealing. Dqweek7 r 9 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Dqweek7 r 9 - Essay Example John Elkington (1995) coined the phrase, "people, planet, profit". This was while he was at SustainAbility. This is an organization which was created in order to deliver guidelines which are socially responsible. This were supplied to large corporations who considered profits to be more important than any possible benefits for wider society. An enterprise which is described as having a triple bottom line is one which aims to benefit a variety of constituencies, without exploiting or endangering any one group. In 2004 Elkington described wha the named as the "upstreaming" of a percentage of any profit created by selling finished goods to those who originally produced the raw materials used.( This triple bottom line consists of several factors including concerns which are to do with the environment , society and the economy. The phrase "People, planet and profit" describes the ways in which an organization has an impact in these areas. All three should be considered if an organization is to succeed and to do good. The other side of this is sustainability. Lots of companies finds themselves forced sacrifice possible benefits to wider society simply in order to keep going at a profit. Ultimately profit motives are seen far as being more important than any possible social benefits, unless the organization finds that it can do this using the societyââ¬â¢s resources (Aupperle, Carroll, and Hatfield, 1985). A quick scan of the media backs up this negative view of what is actually going on. Too many organizations seem devoid of any degree of social responsibility. Considering the readings to date, what are the future projections for the idea of the triple bottom line? If a cost versus benefit analysis were carried out on this subject what conclusions would be reached? What reasons are there for this? Brown, Dillard and Marshall, (2006) came up with a working paper about the Triple Bottom Line. Idea. They described it

Time Since Death Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Time Since Death - Essay Example Therefore, the estimation of the time since death is very essential, since it enables the investigators to narrow down their investigation to a given time frame, which makes it easier to investigate the circumstances that surround such deaths and the possible causes (Newberry, Lewis & Walters, 2004:936). Further, the accurate estimation of the time since death is also crucial for enabling the investigators to narrow down to a narrow range of suspects associated with the death, owing to the fact that, when the time since death is known, then it is easy to know the immediate individuals that were associated with the victim, as opposed to when the time since death is unknown (Payne-James, 2003:93). Therefore, this discussion seeks to analyze the various methods that may be used for the estimation of time since death, with a view to critically assessing the merits and demerits of each of these methods. First, the discussion will explain the different methods applicable in estimating the time since death. Secondly, the discussion will tackle the merits associated with each method. Thirdly, the discussion will present the demerits associated with each method. Finally, the discussion will be summed up by a conclusion, which will recap the important points of the discussion, state limitations associated with the discussion and raise the necessary questions, if any. There are various methods that can be applied to estimate the time of death of an individual, depending on the environment where the body is found, the evidence available and the nature of the cause of death (Szelecz, Fournier, Seppey, Amendt & Mitchell, 2014:671). The different methods that can be applied to estimate the time since death include: This is a method applied to estimate time since death, through the measurement of the core temperature of the body, relative to the temperature of the surrounding environment where the body is found, also referred to as the ambient temperature (Warther,

Analysing The Effects Of Overpopulation In Developing Countries Politics Essay
Analysing The Effects Of Overpopulation In Developing Countries Politics Essay Over population has been identified as one of the major reasons for the poverty that thrives in many developing countries including India, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia amongst others. These countries have high birth rates with inadequate resources to support their growing populace. To some extent they would be a living justification of Thomas Malthus statement that the power of population is indefinitely greater than the power in the earth to produce subsistence for man. In this essay, I seek to give an in depth explanation of Malthus principles on population growth and food production and further draw up the relationship between these principles and some of the developing countries of the 21th century. The underlying basis for Malthus principle is that population, when unchecked, increased in a geometrical ratio, and subsistence for man in an arithmetical ratio à [i]à in lay mans terms this would mean that human beings become double their number in a particular period while food production only increases a unit more in that same period. The law of diminishing returns would support his claim, in that as more of a variable factor, which is labour, is employed on a fixed factor, which is land, total production increases to a point and then starts to decrease.à [ii]à He insinuates that if this occurs for a long period of time, there will be many people chasing fewer goods and this will cause prices of goods to increase unduly. Further, the supply of labour will exceed its demand as more people are fighting for few jobs on the market, as such wage rates decrease to a large extent. In these cases the lower classes always suffer most. According to Malthus, even if we assume that diminishing returns never sets in and the land produces the same amount of output year after year, man would still have to face this dreadful phenomena. He believes that though humans hold the power to reason, it is still inherent in their nature to reproduce constantly. However, according to him misery is the check that represses the superior power of population and keeps its effects equal to the means of subsistence.à [iii]à The Malthusian theory holds that there are natural checks on overpopulation. Some are natural causes like miscarriages, earthquakes and famine while others include vice and are due to mans struggle for survival. The latter is quite similar to Charles Darwins theory on the survival of the fittest.à [iv]à In a bid to stay alive human beings resort to wars of conquest and expansion, killing many others in the process .Malthus conclusive belief was that if population growth was not checked there would soon be a sort of world famine, where a huge percentage of the worlds population would have no food to eat. Thus man should minimize reproduction through means such as abstaining from sex. Today, Malthus has been criticized by many for putting forth a theory which has been proven wrong. This is because although the population of the world was about 6,790,062,216 in the year 2009à [v]à , a fair number of countries are still able to cater for themselves. Countries like the United Sates are facing the health hazard of obesity resulting from having too much food to eat.à [vi]à However, for others, this is not so. Malthus predictions of a population boom in relation to food availability is especially proven in the case third world countries, most of which appear to be producing food at a subsistence level. They have not adopted mechanized methods of farming and produce on a very small scale. The farmers who represent a large portion of the the populace in these countries are very poor and consequently produce low yields.à [vii]à This would explain why they cannot produce food for themselves, and have to import large amounts of foreign goods into their lands. The reasons for the adaptation of these systems of agriculture vary in different countries. Under President Mugabes government, Zimbabwe has a poor land tenure system where the government, instead of farmers owns the land on which they farm on. This makes it difficult for farmers to expand their farm lands and. Poverty also rules supreme among the indigenous population, poor farmers therefore have to turn to subsistence farming,à [vi ii]à i.e. farming to feed themselves their families and probably leave a few crops to barter with other famers and a little to sow during the following planting season. Due the fact that, production is not stable coupled with the land tenure system i.e. (lands in Zimbabwe are owned solely by the government); banks in Zimbabwe are reluctant to give out loans out to farmersà [ix]à . The problem with Africas subsistence farming culture has to do with irrigation and fundingà [x]à . The issue of irrigation has to do with the climate of Africa. Africa has two main seasons. The rainy season and the dry season. These two seasons are annual. Therefore farmers predicting the weather cultivate their lands in the late dry season and wait for the rainy season to irrigate their crops. Now, most at times the rains starts unevenly i.e. it doesnt always start on time. Some farmers therefore lose their full crop yield. Others lose their harvests completely. Generally, there is no artificial irrigation in most developing communities. Countries like Ethiopia, which have huge geographic desert patches have an even worse problem of having little arable landà [xi]à . This situation is a climatic situation, a natural phenomenon. Fertility rates definitely continue to rise, causing an increasing growth to the population; most developing countries produce more mouths than they can feed. The Alan Guttmacher Institute in the United States conducted a research which proved that countries which provided free or cheap contraceptive services at cheap rates or without charge, tended to have lower birth rates. They also realized that instances of teenage pregnancy were less among countries who engaged in early sex education of their childrenà [xii]à . The population of Ethiopia for instance, increased from 12 million in 1900 to 73 million in 2005.à [xiii]à Obviously, a lot of people in developing countries remain ignorant of the negative implications of overpopulation to a nation and the few that know disregard this notion. Some believe children are a blessing from God, and will reject any ideology that prevents them from procreating. In some African countries for instance, a mans status is heightened by the n umber of children, especially males, he can produce. . Though these measures are not as extreme as abstaining from sex and other measures Malthus puts forward for reducing population growth, Governments some developing countries, like Ghana, have tried to introduce policies to check this such as Family planning and sex educationà [xiv]à . One of the checks on population according to the Malthusian principles is miscarriages. However due to improved healthcare systems this is greatly curbed in a lot of developing nations and does not restrict population expansion. Developing countries have had a high price to pay for the amalgamation of increase population growth and low agricultural production. Just as Malthus predicted, there is a synonymous increase in the unemployed population, eventually creating rising inflation. The compiled inflation rate, for instance in Zimbabwe, between 1997 and 2007 was 38%à [xv]à .This further creates a high standard of living, because there are many people fighting to survive on fewer goods. Subsequently, the employment rates start to decrease alarmingly. This is due to the fact that there are more people offering their services for fewer jobs. Not everyone can be employed. Also wage rates are reduced and for the same number of working hours, employees are paid a lot less. Hence the need for governments to introduce a minimum wage i.e. the lowest possible wage an employee can be paidà [xvi]à . However, in some cases, because the people are desperate for jobs, they are willing to be cheated by employers, j ust to hold on to a lifeline of survival. Obviously, should the population in Zimbabwe continue to increase to relatively high figures, coupled with the present unemployment figures, of food shortages will occur. The trend that Zimbabwe faces is similar to what many developing countries face. Malthus theory is therefore a definite blue print for a third world economy The Director- General of FAO predicted in 1987, that the year 2010 would see an improvement in agriculture; he however stated that it would have little effect on places like sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. He thus urged the world to brace itself to come to the aid of these countries when necessary.à [xvii]à It may be argued that countries like China have an even greater population and yet do not face food shortages, but the difference is clear. The Chinese are a highly industrious people. Their governments interests are channeled toward industrialization and infrastructure development. Most of their farmers are paddy rice farmersà [xviii]à , who have the advantage of farming in two advantages areas, the water logged lowland paddies and the hillside highland ridgesà [xix]à . The Chinese also have the advantage of being in a temperate climatic zone, enjoying four seasons winter which is useless to farmers, spring, summer and autumn which are farming friendlyà [xx] à . Artificial irrigation measures are also available in certain areas, i.e. both mechanical and locally improvised. The mechanized farming used by Chinese farmers irrefutably makes them more productive. The Chinese government in their own way has discovered the practicality of Malthus theory i.e. the possibility of overpopulation causing food shortages. In their bid to curb this problem, they have issued legislative laws that, limit child birth to one child per familyà [xxi]à . Elaborating on this conclusion, it can be realized that Malthus theory works very well in third world where lack of mechanization and funding creates deficiencies in farming. Countries like China, however, due to mechanization, climatic conditions and artificial irrigation structures enable their farmers to meet the countrys food production needs. Developing countries should follow this example to emerge from the poverty that is gradually sucking them in. Improved farming techniques as well as reduced birth rates are the way forward for the developing world.

Analysis If Homeward Bound :: essays research papers
Homeward Bound Homeward Bound is a satiric play, which attacks the socially accepted standards of today’s society. This play is known as a comedy of manners; defined as light social satire. Homeward Bound also consists of amusing characters that the audience can relate to. This type of play appeals to mostly sophisticated audiences and actors because the play consists of clever use of language and brilliant conversation. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Elliot Hayes’ use of satire in Homeward Bound plays an important part in the telling of the story. His use of satire expresses how the characters feel about each other and their situations. There were many parts of the play that had satire in them. The scene where the mother is talking about her gay son and his partner is an example because it was a mockery of how “normal people'; handled the touchy subject of homosexuality. Another satiric scene is where Norris told her family about her affair, but the circumstances were that she had the affair with Nick’s gay partner and she was bearing his child. This is a very unusual example of satire because this sort of thing usually does not happen to a middle class society (or at least not that I have heard of). The family’s reaction to this newfound information is very humorous because they act almost opposite as to what is expected. Hayes is almost ridiculing the middle class’ mentality and their views on life. Hayes also satirizes when Bonnie reveals Donna’s little secret of her indecent behavior when she was a little child. This was totally unexpected and it revealed Donna’s character as being loose. Even though the characters did the opposite of what was expected and were quite amusing, the audience could relate to them because, before all the surprises were revealed the audience saw the characters as ordinary people. Once the “skeletons'; came out of the closet, the audience realized that euthanasia, homosexuality, alcoholism and affairs are problems that all levels of class face. This realization brings the audience closer to the characters and the circumstances presented on stage. This play appeals more to a sophisticated and mature audience because of the clever use of language and brilliant conversation. There was a lot of slang and colloquialism used. Usage of swears was interesting; it is a normal assumption to make that middle class families are not so crass. This was effective because it provided more realism by showing how people would talk in these serious and yet humorous situations.

The system will require a user name and a password to view or edit anything! Only one person is permitted to use the system, no-one else requires access à All files will also be password protected. Database à The instructor will be able to add or delete any records as needed à It will hold all necessary details Specific Objectives à The database will be able to create reports to show what stage the student is at à The database will calculate how many lessons a student has had and how much they have paid with plus if there are any outstanding balances remaining. My system is designed to help the instructor, the instructor has many problems with the current system, and many times it has cost him jobless hours. The current system is very old and has a lot of potential problems and I wish to make a system that eradicates these obvious problems. My system for a start will store the entire student details carefully and properly in line with all data protection acts. The main thing is that these details should not get lost and the instructor has access to this all the time so that he can contact the student at any time. The details should also be available so that it can be updated any time it needs to be. By having all these details stored onto the system it is kept safely and in one place rather than having paper forms lying about getting lost and muddled up, these forms will only be accessed only in one place so if the instructor needs these back in the office or at to work from at home then it is not possible to have multiple copies as it will not all be up to date. For example if a student changes the home phone number then the instructor will have to update every sheet of paper he has with the students phone number if he does not then it will be inconsistent and this can cause problems. The main reason for my proposal of this system is to ensure that the instructor does not continue double booking and not booking students at all. Currently at the end of a lesson the student asks for a booking and the instructor will look in his diary and book appropriately, many times what happens is the instructor looks at the wrong date, for example if the student asks for April 21st 2008 then the instructor may accidentally open may 21st 2008 and tell the student he is free. But in reality on that day an on that time he is busy. This is one of the things the instructor is complaining about and also another thing that has been drawn to my attention is that he misreads the time, so he tells the student that he is booked at 13:00 tomorrow but he is actually free he has a lesson at 3:00 not 13:00 so this is one way the instructor is loosing out on money. I wish to remove this issue and avoid these mistakes happening. This will need to be created in Access. DESCRIPTION OF MEASURES PLANNED FOR SECURITY AND INTEGRITY OF DATA. The data must be kept secure and correct as this informationââ¬â¢s is very confidential, if details of the student were to get lost or misplaced then this would be in breach of the data protection act. To keep the data secure I am going to make sure that the user backs up the data at the end of every working week and keeps this disc either safely at home or in the office. There will also be a back up of the main system so if it happens to crash or is damaged then it can be replaced. If the system does crash then the files will have to be manually transferred back into the system from the backup. DESCRIPTION OF MEASURES PLANNED FOR SYSTEM SECURITY The system will not be secured with passwords however the computer will have a password this will be set to expire every 28 days to ensure that the data is safe even if someone gains the password, the user will generally have to be careful and keep the laptop besides him at all times or lock it in a glove compartment. When the instructor goes home he can either take it with him and store it at home carefully or leave it at the office in a safe place. As my system is only designed for one person the password on the system should be a sufficient security measure. TEST STRATEGY The system must be thoroughly tested to make sure that no errors occur the system is up and running. This is logical because if errors occur when the user starts to use the system, it can cost time to get it fixed. Hopefully if my testing strategy is good enough, it will not have any errors when it goes live. I am going to use bottom up testing, to test the system. This involves testing each individual module using prepared test data, which includes normal data, extreme data, upper and lower limits and individual data after this is done I will test the program to see if every route through the program is tested, every statement is executed, accuracy of the processing and that the program fits the original specification. This will make sure that the system is running correctly as this is basically using the whole system. I am also going to test the system in a beta testing method, although this will be a small scale. I am going to give the system to the user for a week just to make sure that everything works correctly. IMPLEMENTATION Login Screen Main Menu This is the main menu of my programme from here there are three options availability details and student details. Finally you can exit. Testing Test ID Test Data Test/Type Reason for test Expected Results Actual Results Data Entry 1. My system does conisit of tables and menus, both the student details and availability detail screens are very simple, it just displays details about these two entities. The booking screen is more complex because it needs to be live, so when the instructor makes a booking it needs to update on the next lesson booked screen and the availability screen. PROCEDURE AND VARIABLE LIST/ DESCRIPTIONS FOR PROGRAMS OR LIST OF PACKAGE ITEMS DEVELOPED Type of item Item Name Descriptions Table Student Details Holds all the details of the students that the instructor teaches, this includes first name, last name, address, phone number and the details of their next lesson that has been booked. Holds the details of all the available time slots in the coming fortnight, this allows the instructor only to see what is available, he can liaise with the student and once a slot is agreed a booking can be made. Form Make A Booking This form allows the user to make a booking for a lesson, he will need to enter the student number, and then first of all select a time and then the date. Once all these are selected the appointment is made. Form Next lesson Booked Has a list of students and the date and time of their next lesson, so the instructor can check on this if he receives a query from the student. CREATION AND CUSTOMISATION OF THE DATABASE TABLES I created all my tables in Microsoft access; I then linked it up to visual basics, The table below is the Student Details table. It consists of mostly text and one field of number, the reason that the telephone number is a text field rather than a number is because telephone numbers usually start with a 0 and if I put the data type as numbers then it will not let me add a 0 at the front. USER MANUAL BRIEF INTRODUCTION The instructor database is a simple system to handle bookings given to the instructor. The system allows the instructor to control appointments already made and allows him to make new appointments. It allows him to keep electronic records of all students, past and present. The students all have unique student numbers that the instructor can use to search for them. It stores details about studentââ¬â¢s names, addresses, telephone numbers and the lessons they have booked. There is a very easy to use form that allows the instructor to make a booking. Microsoft Access 2007 or later. To install the system one must either move the file onto the hard disc of the computer. This can be done by selecting the file ââ¬ËInstructor Database Systemââ¬â¢ and copying and pasting it into an empty folder on the hard disc, this maybe the best idea as there is a possibility a removable storage device could get lost or corrupt. This system could be also run from a removable storage device by opening the file and run it straight away. To back the system up the system the database file can be copied onto a USB pen or CD-R. When the system is going to be backed up, the file should be copied onto the USB pen, when this done a message box may appear asking if you want to replace the existing file just select ââ¬Ëyesââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëyes to allââ¬â¢. This would mean that the backup would be separated from the main system, meaning less chance of losing both the original and the backup. USING THE SYSTEM Here is a simple short set of instructions to use the system. When the instructor opens up they will be asked to log on, The username at the moment is Ian and the password is Burleigh. Once they enter all these details correctly it allows them to use the system. Once the instructor logs on, he will come to the main menu of the system, I am going to show him to basic things in this tutorial, how to find the phone number of a student and then how to make a booking. Below is the main menu, to get to the student phone number he has to select the student details button, then the screen will have three buttons saying details, he can select any of these three, they all do the same job. Once that is selected at the screen below will appear, there are no details at the moment, but once show details button is pressed all the details will appear. The instructor now needs to press the back button until he arrives back at the main menu, and then select availability details. Then select make a booking. Once the make a booing screen appears first he has to select the date that he wants, then the time and finally the student number. Once that is done press save and then it is saved. Appraisal Comparision of project performance against objectives. To compare the objectives and the performance , I will put the original objectives down and compare against each one. General Objectives Security. The database will be able to create reports to show what stage the student is at à The database will calculate how many lessons a student has had and how much they have paid with plus if there are any outstanding balances remaining.

English Property Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
English Property Law - Essay Example Intellectual property is also integral to property law. One of the reasons for the promulgation of the law is the need to create distinction between real property and personal property (Worthington 2000 92). Of course, one of the most important goals of those that promulgated the law is to ensure that the conflicts that arise on the ownership of property will be reduced as much as possible. One of the instances that can be used to truly certify that the English property system is more pragmatic than theoretical is the manner in which judges give judgement in cases, precisely those that pertain to property law. Instead of strictly following what the statutes say, most judges would rather rely on logic. Lockeââ¬â¢s theory of property also seems to reiterate this point. This is because Locke begins his arguments my stating that, at inception, property was personalââ¬âmeaning that there were no individual owners. However, the persistence of this state of thing will mean that no on e would be able to use land, for example, for individual or communal benefit. Locke recognizes that there is the need to create a system in which individuals can lay claim of ownership to what was hitherto communally owned (Tully 1980 34). This aspiration would be impossible if one desires to get the assent of every member of the community. It can only happen when individuals begin to exchange something in return for what they desire. At the very inception, it was their bodily sweat; later, it was valuable property; and finally it became money. The introduction of money meant that the yardstick for separating the wealthy from the poor had been established. By interpretation, one could assume either of these two opinions. First, one could conclude that the flexibility, rather than the rigidity, of the English property law has really helped to limit the level in which every Tom, Dick and Harry who is a capitalist would be able to turn personal property into real property. Secondly, on e may conclude, on the other hand, that flexibility of the English property law (which is best established in the practical sense) has helped to materialize the desire of the capitalist to convert most of what was formerly owned communally into real property. On the whole, one would discover that Lockeââ¬â¢s property theory favours capitalism as against communalism. What Locke defends is that money can be the solution to all problems (Tully 1980 52). Even in England, this seems to be true because if anybody is rich enough to employ the services of a proficient lawyer, the case is close to being won already even before any judgment is pronounced. The lawyer would be able to also turn the odds to favour their client. The English property is very fluid in nature. Most lawyers, hence, take advantage of this. They have been able to make the English property law, which to an average person would appear as one of the most rigid laws ever, into one that has become very flexible (Worthing ton 2000 97). For instance, there is really no clear distinction between real and personal property again. This is because lawyers have been able to interchange them, through interpretation, to suit the demands of their case. What lawyers have been able to accomplish may not really be as a result of their ingenuity but as a result of the fact that the law itself has created the lapses. For example, normally, the English statute would recognise an estate owned by a family as
